About AZIZA

Aziza Iqbal is an Indian visual artist, surface design and pattern specialist currently based in Doha, Qatar.

Having taken several courses in geometry with the UK-based Art of Islamic Pattern tutors, and outreach programs by the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha and the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts over the years, the foundation of her work is rooted in the harmony and symbolism of Islamic art, crafts and architecture – the perfect blend of science, aesthetics and spirituality.

She has travelled extensively to Andalucía, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and India to study this Islamic pattern heritage, with a special focus on Mughal Architecture of the Subcontinent – a distinctive blend of the Persian artistic influence and indigenous Indian techniques and motifs.

Working with both traditional and digital media, she creates intricate patterns of varying styles. From geometric compositions, drawn and painted using classical tools and techniques, to vibrant, contemporary renditions of textile weaving patterns.

Some of her key projects include work for Mirzam Chocolate MakersQatar Museums, Katara Hospitality, DoubleTree by Hilton, Rove HotelsAlef Magazine, Brownbook Magazine, and she has also contributed to the Uncommon Dubai guide book edition. In 2017, she was commissioned by Facebook for their Artist-in-Residence Program to render a mural at their newly built Hyderabad HQ.

She conducts practical geometry workshops for beginners, and is a community class instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, teaching courses in watercolour painting and the traditional construction techniques used in Islamic geometric patterns.

Aziza is a SELECT artist at Kulture Shop; India's premier artist collective bringing original and exclusive artwork on premium lifestyle products. Some of her work is available for purchase at Kulture Shop online.
